Salvia Divinorum The “diviner’s mint” Informational Guide Originating in the Oaxaca region of Mexico, Salvia divinorum has been cultivated and used for centuries by the Mazatec people for religious ceremonies and healing. This unique, powerful, visionary herb produces a state of “divine inebriation” by the user when ingested or smoked properly under the appropriate conditions. Salvia divinorum, a type of sage, is the only known type of the approximate 1000 varieties to induce visions. Currently, Salvia divinorum, nor its active component, salvinorin-A, are illegal anywhere in the world. Growing, buying and selling Salvia plants, leaves and extracts are completely lawful. The effects of this substance are extremely different from alcohol, but it does impair the users ability to drive and does decrease coordination. Salvia divinorum is not a drug, it is an herb. Do not drive or operate machinery under the influence of this substance. The chemical substance responsible for Salvia’s psychoactive properties is Salvinorin-A. It is a neoclerodane-diterpenoid, not and alkaloid, and in not chemically related to any other psychoactive compound. Salvia is completely non-addictive yet the most potent naturally occurring psychoactive substance known. Repeated use may result in decreased dosage requirements, thus a reverse tolerance phenomenon. Salvia leaf is not a narcotic, sedative, stimulant, or tranquilizer and is physically safe. It works very differently from any other known entheogen and it is unknown exactly which part of the brain is affected and is known to induce visions. Salvia, a consciousness-enhancing herb, can be used for healing rituals and vision quests. An herb with a long tradition of sacred uses commonly used in deep meditation and is best when used in a quiet, peaceful, dark setting or a secluded outdoor setting. Silence or soft soothing music makes for a favorable experience. Idle background chatter or television has proven to be distracting and irritating under Salvia’s influence. The effects of a Salvia experience range in intensity from very mild to intensely powerful whether smoking or ingesting. The experience depends on the users unique body chemistry, state of mind and body at the time of use and the quantity taken. The advantages of using Salvia over other visionary herbs is that no one has ever had a fatal or injurious overdose, it is not addictive nor does the experience last too long. The only side effects may be a mild headache and during the experience the user may perspire. If smoked it may irritate the lungs, but it is much milder the cigarette smoke. It is important to have a “sitter” present during the experience as to not harm oneself, the user may slide out of their chair or try to get up which they should not do. Smoking Salvia, the effects are felt quickly, the experience starts in less than one minute. Chewing Salvia, the first effects are felt in about 15 minutes and the full effects in about 30 minutes. A typical experience lasts 5 to 10 minutes with noticeable after-effects for up to 30 minutes.
